Boss loot rules: how many items and what rarity

ReferenceBuilt from the game’s data

How many items a boss drops, rarity odds by location and level, guaranteed epics, legendaries, recipe scrolls and trash loot — numbers from the game.

A boss never drops nothing: every kill gives a guaranteed number of items, drawn from the boss’s own set by rarity weights. Grey items never drop from bosses.

How many items

LocationItems per boss kill
Dungeon2–3
Raid3–5
World boss3–5

A boss’s set is about 13 items: its own named loot plus pieces of every armour weight, so every class has something to win. The whole group rolls for each item.

Legendary——separate roll, 0.8%

From level 30, dungeon bosses drop no green items. From level 55, every dungeon boss kill gives at least one epic. Raid and world bosses drop epic items and better only.

Legendary items

Legendaries drop only from the final bosses of raids, with a separate roll of 0.8% per kill. The list is in Legendary items.

Recipe scrolls and rare materials

Some bosses also drop recipe scrolls: regular (blue and green) ones at 6%, 5% or 4%, depending on the recipe’s skill; epic ones at 6%, legendary ones at 2.5%. Bosses of level 20+ dungeons drop the Unstable Crystal (14%), some others drop other rare materials. Which boss drops what — Recipe scrolls and Rare boss materials.

Scrolls and rare materials roll as soon as the boss falls: if you die or leave, what already dropped stays. Only the first 2 runs in the window roll them (a run counts once its first such boss falls; the window — a day for dungeons and world bosses, a week for raids — opens with the first roll). In a group they aren’t rolled for: every member gets their own roll. Gear drops on every run.

Regular enemies

Each regular enemy in a dungeon makes up to 3 rolls of 18%; 8% of what drops is blue, the rest green.

Materials from enemies

After every fight won — a wave or a boss — every live party member gets crafting materials by enemy type: cloth from humanoids and worgen, meat and bone from beasts, dust from undead and demons, essences from elementals, ore from constructs and giants, scales from dragons, chitin from insects (hides and herbs only with Skinning or Herbalism). No rolling, on every run. The full table — Dungeon materials.
