Enchants and sharpening: how to upgrade an item

Enchants and sharpening go on any wearable item: who makes them, how to apply them, what they give, heirlooms, and what happens when you re-enchant.

There are two ways to upgrade an item: enchants and sharpening. Both give a permanent stat bonus and live on the item together — one doesn’t get in the way of the other.

Which items can be upgraded

Any wearable item — weapons, armor, cloaks, necklaces, rings, trinkets, off-hands and ranged — of any quality and from anywhere: loot, crafting, Honor gear, the Battle Pass, heirlooms. Both in the bag and while worn. Only shirts and tabards take nothing for now.

Enchants

  • Enchant scrolls come from Enchanting: it writes the enchant into a blank scroll sold by the merchant. What each enchant gives is in the Enchanting reference.
  • Weapon enchants add Power; armor and accessory enchants add Health or Resilience.
  • Any player can apply a finished scroll, even without the profession: the scroll’s menu in the Pouch → “✨ Apply to item…”, or the item’s menu → “✨ Enchant”.
  • An item holds one enchant: a new one replaces the old one.
  • An enchanter has a trick of their own: any enchant on their own ring, necklace or trinket. Such an item becomes “self only” — it can’t be sold, traded or mailed.

Sharpening

  • Three crafts make sharpening: the blacksmith — whetstones for weapons (+Power) and plating for plate and mail, the leatherworker — leather kits, the tailor — cloth kits. The kit is matched to the armor material; accessories have no material, so any armor kit fits them.
  • It’s applied the same way — the item’s menu → “🔨 Reinforce”.
  • Sharpening is separate from enchants: an item can have both.

Heirloom items

Enchants and sharpening go on an heirloom on top of its growing stats and can even add Resilience, which heirlooms don’t have: Heirloom items.

How to tell

An enchanted item has a green ✦ on its icon, a sharpened one an amber ⚒: on the Character sheet, in the bag, in the Hero Bank and when inspecting in the Armory. The bonuses themselves are in the item’s tooltip.

FAQ

Can I enchant a personal item?

Yes: being personal doesn’t stop enchants or sharpening. It only means the item can’t be passed on afterwards: Personal items.

Do enchants disappear if I sell the item?

No. The item goes to the merchant as it is, and if you buy it back within a day it returns with the same enchants and sharpening: Merchant buyback.
