Comparing items and item level
How to compare an item with what you wear on a computer and on a phone, what the arrows on bag icons mean and how your average item level is calculated.
Before you put an item on, compare it with what you’re wearing: the game shows the difference in every stat and a one-line verdict.
On a computer
Hover over an item in your bag, at the merchant, on the auction, in the mail, in the guild bank or in the loot window — an “Equipped” card appears next to it, with ▲ and ▼ differences on the stats. If the window is narrow, the cards stack one under the other.
On a phone
A touch screen has no hover, so tap the item: its menu shows a table with this item, the equipped one and the difference. Clicking an item on a computer opens the same table.
Arrows in the bag
An item’s icon in the bag shows a green ▲ if it’s better than what you wear and a red ▼ if it’s worse. No hover needed.
Special cases
- Rings and trinkets are compared with the weaker of the two you wear — you can pick the other slot. “Equip” puts the item in that same slot.
- A two-handed weapon is compared with your main hand and off-hand together: it removes both.
- An off-hand item while you wear a two-hander is compared with the two-hander — it would have to come off.
- An empty slot — the verdict is “all upside”.
- Can’t be equipped — the verdict is in red with the reason: level required, wrong armor, your class can’t use the weapon, or an heirloom without the pass.
The verdict is one line: “better in every stat”, “worse in every stat”, “some better, some worse” or “no change”.
Item level
“Item Level” is one number on a scale up to 280: in an item’s tooltip, in the comparison table (the “Item Level” row), at the auction and in the Armory. It comes from the level the item was made for, its rarity and where it comes from: at level 60 a blue item is 187, an epic 200, every legendary 280; epics from raids and world bosses are 226, blues from dungeon bosses are 200. The level you can wear it from is a separate line in the tooltip — “requires level N”. An heirloom counts at your hero’s level.
Your hero’s average item level is the average “Item Level” of equipped items. Empty slots don’t drag the average down — only worn items count; the shirt, the tabard and unique (turquoise) items aren’t counted. You can see this number in your hero’s profile in the Armory, where you can also sort heroes by gear. The table is in the Item level reference.
