How professions work
12 professions of three kinds: up to two crafts, a free gathering profession with them, secondary ones for all. How to learn, unlock recipes and unlearn.
Zarhold has 12 professions. Learning them is free and possible at any hero level: you pick up to two crafts, the matching gathering profession comes bundled with them, and Cooking, First Aid and Fishing are open to everyone.
How many professions you can have
| Kind | Professions | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Crafts | Blacksmithing, Tailoring, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking, Alchemy | 2 at most |
| Gathering | Mining, Herbalism, Skinning | bundled with a craft |
| Secondary | Cooking, First Aid, Fishing | all three |
Bundled gathering
Learn a craft and its paired gathering profession comes free, taking no slot:
- Blacksmithing and Engineering → Mining;
- Leatherworking → Skinning;
- Alchemy → Herbalism.
Enchanting and Tailoring have no pair: an enchanter gets materials by disenchanting unwanted gear, a tailor uses cloth from humanoid enemies (where to get Linen Cloth). In dungeons both get their own materials too — every party member after every fight: dust and essences from undead, demons and elementals, Silk Cloth and Runecloth from humanoids (Dungeon materials).
How to learn
- Open the Professions screen (on PC — the K key).
- Press "Learn craft" and pick one. Secondary professions are learned with the "Learn" button on their row.
- Skill starts at 1 and grows to 300 — from crafting, gathering, fishing and breaking items down. The details are in Recipe colours.
There are no trainers and no paid lessons. Of the game's 171 recipes, 147 unlock on their own once your skill is high enough. The other 24 are learned only from a boss scroll: 13 epic and legendary ones and 11 regular skill 100–210 recipes from the bosses of level 10–38 dungeons — Recipe scrolls.
Crafting is instant: no timers, no failures, and the product is always exactly what the recipe says. Gear goes to your bag, everything else goes as stacks into your Pouch.
How to unlearn a profession
Any profession can be unlearned with the "Forget profession" button next to it. Keep in mind:
- the skill is lost completely; you can learn it again for free, but from skill 1;
- recipes unlocked by skill close, while recipe scrolls you learned from bosses stay with your hero;
- a craft takes its gathering profession with it unless your second craft also grants it (blacksmiths and engineers share Mining);
- after unlearning Fishing your Fishing Journal and achievements stay.
FAQ
Can I take three crafts?
No, two crafts at most. Gathering and secondary professions take no slot.
Does a profession depend on my hero's level?
No: you can learn one at level 1, and skill grows from work, not from level. The best materials, though, are in higher lands, and those open up as your hero levels.
