Games like WoW in your browser: classes, raids and guilds with no download

Looking for a game like World of Warcraft that runs in your browser? What makes an MMORPG feel like WoW, and how Zarhold does classes, raids and PvP.
“Something like WoW, but it runs in my browser” is one of the most common things MMORPG fans search for. It’s easy to see why: classes with clear roles, dungeons with friends, raids, professions and an auction house keep people playing for years — but installing a huge client and blocking out an evening for every session isn’t always an option. Here’s what actually makes a game “like WoW”, what to honestly expect from a browser MMORPG, and how those pieces work in Zarhold.
What makes a game “like WoW”
When people compare a game to World of Warcraft, they rarely mean the graphics. They mean a familiar set of systems that make you come back every day:
- Class and role. The tank holds the enemy, the healer keeps the group alive, damage dealers bring it down, and hybrids can do more than one job.
- Talents. Two heroes of the same class can play very differently depending on their spec.
- Dungeons and raids. Bosses with their own abilities that test your group, and loot that makes you want to come back tomorrow.
- Gear and item level. Your equipment grows with your hero, and the best pieces drop from the hardest bosses.
- Professions and a player economy. Gathering, crafting and an auction house where players trade with each other.
- Guilds and PvP. A community of your own, a rated arena and battlegrounds.
If a browser game has all of that, it’s fair to call it a WoW-like MMORPG. If it has a “collect reward” button and a speed-up timer instead, it’s a different genre.
What to honestly expect from a browser MMORPG
A browser isn’t a game client, and it’s worth saying so. You won’t be running freely across a huge 3D world in a phone browser tab. Browser MMORPGs solve this in different ways: some simplify the graphics, others make combat automatic.
Zarhold takes a third route: the world is a map of lands, and every fight is a turn-based card duel. Instead of an action bar, your hero has a deck of their class and talent cards, and every turn is a decision about what to play. That keeps what matters — classes, roles, boss tactics — while the game runs in a regular browser on PC and phone. More on combat in Card MMORPGs: what they are.

Classes, roles and talents
Zarhold has ten classes. The Barbarian, Revenant, Lightbringer and Druid can tank; the Priest, Stormbringer, Lightbringer and Druid can heal; any class can deal damage. The Lightbringer and Druid are the only ones open to all three roles. Every class has its own deck, armour type and Health pool: plate wearers are the toughest, cloth classes hit hard but need care. The full table is in the knowledge base: How to choose a class.
Talents unlock at level 10. Each class has three talent trees, you have 51 points by level 60, and respecs are always free. From level 20 you can keep two specialisations — say, a damage spec for questing and a healing spec for dungeons. See Talents in a card RPG.
There are eleven races in three factions, each with a permanent bonus and two abilities: one for fighting creatures, one for fighting players.
Dungeons, raids and heroic mode
Group PvE works the way fans of classic MMOs expect:
- 23 dungeons for three players — a tank, a healer and a damage dealer, from level 10 to 60;
- 6 raids and 3 world bosses for five — a tank, a healer and three damage dealers, for level 60 heroes;
- raids and world bosses have a heroic mode: enemies are much tougher, and epic boss gear is item level 232 instead of 226.
Threat works the way you know it: an enemy attacks whoever has dealt it the most damage, and the tank pulls it back with a taunt that holds for two enemy turns and reduces the damage the tank takes. Drag a fight out and the boss goes into a rage. Loot is rolled with “Need” and “Greed”, and every raid boss drops loot once a day, until the daily reset at 03:00 Moscow time. Boss guides live in the How to beat section and in World bosses and heroic raids.
Short on friends? Empty dungeon or raid slots are filled by the world’s residents — heroes with their own gear, talents and role, who think about their moves themselves.
Gear, tier sets and professions
Every item has an item level, and the best epics drop from raid bosses. There are class armour sets too — Tier 1, with bonuses for the pieces you collect. The Item Atlas shows what drops where.
There are twelve professions: six crafts (blacksmithing, tailoring, enchanting, engineering, leatherworking, alchemy), three gathering professions and three secondary ones — cooking, first aid and fishing. What you make sells on the player auction house. Where to start: Which profession to choose.
Guilds, the arena and life at level 60
- Guilds with ranks, a guild bank and their own chat; parties of up to five heroes; friends and private messages.
- A rated arena in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5 with a separate rating for each format, a five-on-five battleground and duels with stakes.
- A capital city for level 60 heroes with errands and mini-events, Hero Chambers — your own room with trophies — and over 200 achievements.
The website shows who’s on top in the ladders and the armory, and combat reports live in the Battle Chronicles.
How Zarhold differs from WoW
- Cards, not buttons. Turn by turn, no rush: you have time to think, and you can’t blame a mistake on lag.
- No download, and it works on your phone. The game opens in a browser and progress is stored on the server — start on your PC, carry on from your phone (in landscape).
- Free to play. You can create a hero and play without paying.
- Live parties and the world’s residents. In a group everyone controls their own hero, and an empty slot gets filled by a resident — the dungeon doesn’t wait for everyone to show up.
Games like WoW in your browser: FAQ
Is there a browser game like WoW?
Yes, if you look at the substance rather than the graphics. Zarhold has classes with tank, healer and damage roles, talents, dungeons, raids with a heroic mode, professions, an auction house, guilds, an arena and battlegrounds. What’s different is combat: it’s turn-based and card-driven, which is why the game runs right in your browser.
Can I play Zarhold on a low-end PC or a phone?
Yes. The game opens in a browser with no client to install, and combat is turn-based — it doesn’t need fast reflexes or a high frame rate. More in MMORPG for a low-end PC.
Is Zarhold an official WoW game?
No. Zarhold is an independent game with its own world. It isn’t affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment; World of Warcraft is their trademark and is mentioned here only to compare the genre.
The bottom line
A game “like WoW” in your browser isn’t a copy of a big MMORPG squeezed into a tab — it’s the same classes, roles, raids and economy in a format that fits a browser. In Zarhold, that format is card combat. You can find out whether it’s for you in a few minutes: create a hero and do your first quests, and the full tour of the game is in the Zarhold review.
