An MMORPG without autoplay for phone and PC: why auto battle gets boring, how manual card combat works in Zarhold and where auto battle is only optional.

Many mobile MMORPGs have long been playing themselves: the hero runs to the target, fights the enemies and hands in quests on their own, and the player just watches and taps “claim reward”. No wonder people keep searching for a “mobile MMORPG without autoplay”: they want to play, not watch.

Below: what’s wrong with mandatory auto battle, what “an MMORPG without autoplay” really means, and how it works in Zarhold, where you fight every important battle yourself.

What auto battle is and why it gets boring

Auto battle is a mode where the game picks the abilities and fights for you. It often comes with auto-pathing (the hero walks to the target) and auto-questing. In moderation it’s handy for getting through routine while you’re busy. But when you can’t play without it, problems appear:

  • Decisions disappear. If a fight is won without you, your knowledge of your class means nothing — only the numbers matter.
  • The game becomes waiting. You watch your hero fight instead of fighting.
  • Power turns into numbers. When player skill doesn’t change the outcome, the only thing left is stacking stats.

What “an MMORPG without autoplay” means

It’s a game where the outcome of a fight depends on your decisions: which ability to use, when to defend, what to kill first. Such a game may still have auto battle, but as an optional convenience for routine, not as the main way to play. A good sign: the hard fights (bosses, dungeons, PvP) can only be done by hand.

How combat works in Zarhold

Zarhold is an MMORPG where your hero’s abilities are cards. Every fight is a turn-based duel:

  • at the start of a fight you have 6 cards in hand and draw one more each turn;
  • cards cost Crystals: 1 on the first turn, then one more each turn, up to 10 — unspent Crystals are lost;
  • once per turn you can use your class power for 1 Crystal, plus a racial ability and consumables;
  • from turn 10 the fight heats up and you draw 2 cards a turn;
  • you get 60 seconds per turn, so you can think calmly — no fast reflexes needed.

Every turn is a small puzzle: play a strong card now or save Crystals for next turn, heal or finish off the enemy, break their shield or hit them directly. More in “How combat works”.

Where Zarhold has auto battle and where it doesn’t

To be honest: Zarhold does have auto battle, but it’s optional and only works where the fight is routine.

By hand only:

  • dungeons, raids and world bosses — live group combat where everyone acts at the same time, a minute per turn;
  • elites and land bosses — auto battle doesn’t work on them;
  • live duels against other players.

Optional auto battle (unlocked by the battle pass premium):

  • regular enemies and packs in the lands of the world — to get through familiar fights faster;
  • auto arena — up to 5 fights a day, with the same rewards as a manual fight.

So the heart of the game — dungeons, raids, bosses and duels — is always in your hands. Auto battle is just a way to save time on what you already know how to do.

Why manual combat doesn’t get tiring

  • It’s turn-based. You don’t need to press buttons fast — you need to think. That works on a phone and on a laptop.
  • Fights vary. Enemies, packs, elites and bosses need different tactics, and in a group the tank, healer and damage dealer each have their own job.
  • There’s growth. Talents change your deck and class power, so the same class plays in different ways.
  • Mistakes teach you. Losing doesn’t cost experience or levels, and the combat log shows what went wrong.

Who an MMORPG without autoplay is for

  • People who are tired of watching the game play itself.
  • People who love tactics and planning: turn-based RPGs, card games, chess puzzles.
  • People who want PvP where your head decides, not just your gear.
  • People who play on a phone: turn-based combat works well with a finger and doesn’t need precise taps — more in “Turn-based MMORPG on mobile”.

MMORPG without autoplay FAQ

Does Zarhold have auto battle?

Yes, but only if you want it — with the battle pass premium: for regular enemies and packs in the world and up to 5 auto arena fights a day. Dungeons, raids, world bosses, elites, land bosses and live duels are by hand only.

Can I play on a phone without autoplay?

Yes. Zarhold opens in your phone’s browser, combat is turn-based, and you play everything important yourself.

Do I have to buy premium to play?

No. Without premium you simply fight every battle by hand — as intended. Zarhold is free to play.

Does auto battle work in dungeons and raids?

No. Dungeons, raids and world bosses are live group combat: every player plays their own cards, and empty slots are filled by residents of the world.

Does Zarhold have auto-pathing or auto-questing?

No. The world is made of lands with enemies and quests that you go to yourself, and you pick up and hand in quests yourself too.

The bottom line

An MMORPG without autoplay is a game where your head wins, not an “auto” button. In Zarhold everything important works that way: dungeons, raids, bosses and duels are by hand only, and auto battle is an optional convenience for routine.
