New MMORPGs of 2026: what launched this year and what to play

New MMORPGs of 2026: Aion 2, MapleStory Classic World, EverQuest Legends, early access games and what is coming next. Dates, platforms and payment models.
2026 has been a rich year for MMORPGs: big Asian titles launched worldwide, classic worlds from the early 2000s came back, and several ambitious games opened early access. Below is which MMORPGs launched in 2026, what is still in early access, what to look out for next — and how to pick a game you won’t drop after a week.
A fair warning: this blog is run by the developers of Zarhold. About other games we only write what’s easy to check — release date, platform and payment model — as of late October 2026. No audience figures and no “better / worse” verdicts.
How to choose a new MMORPG: a checklist
- Released or early access? Early access means an unfinished game: expect bugs, and sometimes a progress wipe before full launch. Check what the developers promise.
- Payment model. Free with purchases, buy-to-play, subscription or a mix — it decides what the game will cost you six months from now.
- Where you can play. PC only, PC and consoles, mobile or browser. Some games need a powerful computer.
- Servers and language. Global versions don’t have servers in every region.
- Combat style. Real-time action, a classic hotbar of skills, or turn-based combat — pick what you enjoy.
- Time commitment. Classic re-releases are slow on purpose; other games are built for short evening sessions.
MMORPGs released in 2026
Aion 2
Where to play: PC, via Steam and the publisher’s launcher. Payment: free to play with purchases. Released: global version on 5 October 2026.
The sequel to NCSOFT’s well-known Korean MMORPG, with flight, classes and faction PvP. The global version opened servers for North and South America, Europe and Japan; founder’s pack buyers got early access from 30 September.
MapleStory Classic World
Where to play: PC (Windows and macOS), Nexon Launcher and Steam. Payment: free to play. Released: 21 October 2026.
A separate “classic” MapleStory world: a 2D MMORPG in the spirit of the early versions, with slow levelling, group grinding and the five original classes. The developers plan to add some of the old regions and the third job advancement later.
EverQuest Legends
Where to play: PC. Payment: buy the game with the first month included, then a monthly subscription. Released: 28 July 2026.
A reimagined take on the 1999 EverQuest: the same world, rebuilt for solo and casual play. Groups go up to four heroes and raids up to eight.
The Quinfall
Where to play: PC, Steam. Payment: buy to play. Released: out of early access in early February 2026.
A medieval sandbox with crafting, trading and sea voyages. It was in early access from January 2025 and had one last wipe before full launch.
World of Warcraft: Midnight
Where to play: PC. Payment: buy the expansion plus a WoW subscription. Released: 2 March 2026.
Not a new game but an expansion to World of Warcraft — still, for many players it was the genre’s biggest event of 2026. If you want something like WoW without installing anything, see “Games like WoW in your browser”.
New MMORPGs in early access
Monsters & Memories
Where to play: PC. Payment: subscription, with no box price and no in-game store. Early access: since 1 October 2026.
An old-school MMORPG in the spirit of late-1990s games: groups, slow levelling and a world that doesn’t hold your hand. The developers say the early access servers will not be wiped.
Stars Reach
Where to play: PC, Steam. Payment: paid early access (founder packs); the developers plan to go free to play at full launch. Early access: since 18 August 2026.
A sci-fi sandbox about settling planets: building, crafting, trading and player self-government. The developers themselves call this build early: PvP and factions are planned for full launch.
Coming next
ArcheAge Chronicles is a new game in the ArcheAge universe from XLGAMES. Steam early access is promised before the end of 2026 with no exact date yet; a free demo ran on Steam in October.
Zarhold — a new card-based MMORPG in your browser
Where to play: in the browser on computer and phone, no download. Payment: free to play, with optional purchases.
Zarhold is a 2026 MMORPG too, but it works differently from everything above: your hero’s skills are cards, and every fight is a turn-based deck duel. Around that combat sits a classic online world:
- 10 classes and 11 races in three factions, levels 1 to 60, talents;
- 26 lands with quests, 23 dungeons, 6 raids and world bosses — with a group, or with world residents filling empty slots;
- PvP: arena from 1v1 to 5v5, a battleground and duels;
- 12 professions, an auction house, guilds and chat.
Who it’s for: players who want a “big” MMORPG with dungeons and raids but without installs, a powerful PC or a race of reflexes. Who it isn’t for: if you want action with aiming — combat here is turn-based. More in “Zarhold — game overview”.
What the MMORPGs of 2026 have in common
- Classics are back. MapleStory Classic World, EverQuest Legends and Monsters & Memories are made for people who miss slow levelling and grouping “like back then”. What old-school means — “An old-school MMORPG”.
- Long early access. More and more MMORPGs launch as paid early access first — before buying, check what’s already in and whether progress will be wiped.
- Fewer barriers to entry. Free starts, one account on PC and phone, games that run right in the browser — a list of those is in “Best browser MMORPGs in 2026”.
New MMORPGs 2026 FAQ
Which MMORPGs launched in 2026?
Notable ones include the global version of Aion 2 (October), MapleStory Classic World (October), EverQuest Legends (July) and The Quinfall (left early access in February). Monsters & Memories and Stars Reach are in early access, and World of Warcraft got the Midnight expansion in March.
Which new MMORPG is best for beginners?
The one that fits your rhythm and your computer. If you don’t want to install anything and prefer calm combat with no reflex race, try Zarhold in your browser. If you want a big 3D game on PC, look at the free-to-play Aion 2. The basics of the genre are in “MMORPGs for beginners”.
Are there new MMORPGs you can play in a browser?
Yes. Zarhold opens in a tab on computer and phone. Other browser online RPGs are listed in “Best browser MMORPGs in 2026”.
Is a free new MMORPG worth trying over a subscription one?
A free start costs you nothing but time, so it’s an easy first step. Subscription games like EverQuest Legends or Monsters & Memories suit players who already know they love the slow, classic style.
Is Zarhold affiliated with the games in this list?
No. All names belong to their respective owners, and the facts about other games come from public sources as of late October 2026.
The bottom line
2026 brought MMORPGs for every taste: big free-to-play games like Aion 2, re-releases of the classics for anyone who misses the early 2000s, and bold projects in early access. If you want a new MMORPG you can jump into right now with no install, open Zarhold: your first quests take just a few minutes. And if you feel nostalgic, read “Old browser MMO games”.
